Good is the Enemy of Great. Every person on this planet is riddled with talent to the very core. If any of us make the decision to even scrape the potential that we possess, we can have anything we ever wanted. The problem is that good gets in the way.
That is a bit of a backward thought isn’t it? Usually we tend to think of evil as a dark force that fights against good. This may be true, but it isn’t evil that keeps us from becoming truly amazing; it is good.
When we get comfortable, there is no reason for change. With the economy being in shambles, we are seeing a few more people waking up, but those of us that have grown up in America have really had it pretty good. It is just too easy to be average when life is so damn comfortable.
You Must Lose Everything Before You Can Make it Big. OK, that last statement is completely false, but I’m sure it has crossed your mind. How many times have we heard a success story that sounds like this:
“I lived in a dumpster surviving only on rat feces. On more than one occasion I was forced to drink my own urine to survive; it’s really not so bad once you get used to it. I was digging through a garbage bag that looked like it might have food in it, and wedged between a leaking dirty diaper, and a moldy sandwich(which I ate), was a business card with a message printed on it:
I Can Make You Rich
I figured, what the hell, I’ll call the guy, it can’t be worse than living in a dumpster, and drinking my own urine, so I called him. The man that answered the phone invited me to meet him at a hotel where he was getting together with a few close friends to discuss their plans to amass the greatest fortune known to man.
When I showed up, there were about 15 people in the room. I smelled so bad that everyone except for the presenter, and the man who became my sponsor stayed. When the speaker said, “It’s so easy a dog with a note in it’s mouth can do it,” I knew I had a chance. I recycled cans, donated plasma, and begged on street corners until I could come up with the $500 to get started.
I talked to everyone that was willing to put up with my stench long enough to have a conversation, sometimes people took my card just so I would leave them alone. My sponsor saw how hard I was working and decided to let me take a shower at his house, and lent me some clothes that didn’t have any holes, or stains from garbage.
It’s only been six months from that day, and now I make a million dollars a month. Now, Every day I throw away a whole sandwich, wrapped neatly in plastic with a business card taped to it that says, “I Can Make You Rich.” You never know where you are going to find ‘The One.’ Network Marketing Changed my Life, anyone can do this business.” -Dumpster Dan: Captain of the Gurus
Dumpster Dan story was inspired by Ben Starner’s MLM Guru Post. It’s seriously worth a listen if you haven’t heard it yet.
Forrest Gumping Your Way to Six Figures: Now, here is a story that is completely true. I lived in Phoenix, and was in a network marketing company with this guy that made Forrest Gump look like a NASA Scientist. I’ll leave out his name, but this guy was about 5’6″, literally dressed like a person trying to be a pimp for Halloween, had Austin Powers chest hair spilling out of his unbuttoned collared shirt, every other sentence was fully integrated with his favorite word, “Fuck.”
Every form of logic said that there was no way this guy was making money, yet he was pulling in about $300 a day, which translates into roughly $9,000 a month. His only secret was that he talked to everyone he saw, and was completely fearless of rejection. Once he got a little bit of success, he now had a story… Come on, I’m sure you can imagine it.
You’re just sitting around on another average lunch break, and around the corner walks a man that resembles Forrest Gump, Austin Powers, and
Iceberg Slim(a famous American Pimp AKA Robert Black) comes rounding the corner. He says, “Would you like to make some extra money?” To which you reply, “I’m not really comfortable promoting prostitutes.” The man laughs, “No it isn’t like that, it’s MLM.”
“You have an MLM for Prostitutes?”
“No you dumb Fuck, we sell super juice and I make $300 a day.” His smile shows some of his rotting teeth, and the leftover pieces of sandwich that are still stuck between them. You take one more look at super pimp, take the DVD he is offering you as you think to yourself, “If this primate can make $300 a day, I am going to be a millionaire!”
Then, you join his business.
A cornered rat will fight for his life. The reason you hear success story after success story that involve a person that has lost everything in life, is simply because they were a cornered animal that had no option left than to survive or die. One of the big reasons that a lot of people don’t succeed is that they are too busy being comfortable.
Good is the enemy of great, because all too often it keeps us floundering in a life of mediocrity when we could be using our potential to be the great person that we were meant to be.
We don’t have to be living in dumpsters, or have the IQ of a walrus to be successful in Network Marketing. What we do need is to truly feel that we want something more, and be willing to put the work in to get it.
For one more example, just listen to this story from when I lived in Hawaii, and went to the beach every day. It is totally relevant, and worth a few minutes of your time, so check it out:

hmmmmmm, seems like I’ve heard a story about this same guy in a dumpster before from someone else. But like every story you tell that seems familiar with one of that other guy’s stories it’s slightly different. (you might know him, his name is Dave, he seems to have been there for a lot of the same things you talk about LOL)

Yeah, the dumpster story is similar to Ben Starner’s Amazing MLM Guy Post, the funny part was I didn’t even do it on purpose. I noticed when I went back and re read it. Ben’s epic MLM Guy rant must have seeded itself in my subconscious and manifested itself in my writing. Everyone should go listen to it if they haven’t already, because it is epic.
I don’t know Dave’s version of the other story, but yes, he was there

Haha,, yeah, Ben’s story is the first thing that came to mind. That thing has gone VIRAL. I think Dave added in that the guy was mentally retarded and only had one arm or something LMAO, I don’t totally remember, but he didn’t have the same details as you do.

That sounds like an embellishment that Dave would make. The guy was not “Full Retard” as they so eloquently put it in the hilarious movie Tropic Thunder, and he had both arms. But either way, he is awesome.

It’s crazy but you hit the nail on the head, for whatever the reason people have to get to the breaking point before they are willing to say enough is enough.
It’s time we all realize that we are capable of achieving so much more and stop allowing fear to dictate our lives.

It’s a funny phenomenon isn’t it David? I marvel at it as I watch all of the different success stories out there. We can succeed whenever we make the decision that we will do whatever it takes; unfortunately it is all too easy to stay average… but when we get cornered, look out world because that’s when people come out swinging! We people are fascinating aren’t we?

Aki,
I never thought about Good being the enemy of Great but it makes sense. We also work harder not to lose something we have than gain something we don’t have. Check out my last post on a similar topic – Are you playing to win or just playing not to lose?

Thanks for the feedback Robert. It is actually a concept that I first heard about from an Amway leader years ago. I don’t know who originally coined the phrase, but the concept really made me think when I heard it, and still does every time it makes way across my brain.
Unfortunately, without a reason to fight, a lot of people just get too busy being comfortable, and ultimately look back on a life of regret.

Hey Aki!
Man… That was a great story and yet so true for the most part, right? Whatever it takes to succeed… You control your own destiny. Thanks for the enlightenment.

Don’t know how we missed this one, we’re a little late commenting…LOL! Of course, it’s a great one as always! Have to agree with you that too many people settle for mediocrity instead of realizing they could BE and DO so much more, if they would just step out of their comfort zone and overcome fear. Thanks for sharing Aki! You’re such an awesome person and great example to others!
